Over Charged for labor?

I recently purchased numerous upgrade parts for my 2022 FXLRS Lowrider S. Lately I’ve gotten tremendously busy and I decided that I would inquire about what the dealership would charge me to install the purchased parts. So, the Service Writer gives me a verbal estimate of $1200-$1500. I concluded that would be a fair price.

Here is the list of parts that I had already purchased & needed installed.

1. D & D FatCat 2-1 exhaust
2. Red Shift 268 Cam
3. Dynojet/Dyno Vision tuner and handlebar mounting kit
4. Trask 1” V-Line Handlbars
5. Joker Machine Dual 1 1/2” Pullback 2 1/2” Risers
6. Trask derby cover with window
7. Trask Cam cover with window
8. Joker machine Billet Aluminum grips.
9. Screaming Eagle 10mm spark plug wires.
10. Hairy Customs gauge relocation kit
11. Rear turn signals

Now, let me inform you that Im a graduate of MMI (Motorcycle Mechanic Institute) , so….. I’m no stranger
to how thing work in & around a shop, & I actually wrenched for HD at the Oakland, Calif. shop many moons ago for the then owner who happens to be my family.

The shop I bought my bike from in Vacaville, Calif was going to do my 1500 mile service, so I decided to let them install
my aftermarket parts. I feel it was an incorrect choice on my part. They had my bike for 5 days. I picked it up yesterday right at closing, so it was kind of hectic at that time, & I was in a hurry. When I got home and sat down to look at my invoice I about fell out of my chair!
$3522.12!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!?!?!?
for 19.5 hrs?
once again…. What the F%>*?!?!?!?
6 hrs to install a pipe, cam, & a Dyno Vision? Just the cam and new pushrods. No springs or oil pump. That’s ridiculous!

6.5 hrs to install risers and handlebars??!?!?!? Are these guys kidding me? My grand daughter can do it quicker….

2.5 hrs to install rear turn signals?!?!?
& another 3 hrs of labor that doesn‘t show any installation of anything.

in addition they didn’t remount my passenger foot pegs and even kept them!!!!!!
Im a little bent out of shape folks, if you can’t tell. I left them with a $5500.00 cashiers check for a deposit and they gave me change in a check for $1977.88.
Thoughts, feelings, comments, concerns? I’ll patiently await all your feedback.

I like that. It tells me that you live by a good code of honor. Sometimes the best thing said is “nothing”. 👍
Good Day to all of you. I wanted to give you my update from this horrific journey. I went to the shop this last Saturday and spoke with the service writer, and the Gen. Mgr..They both apologized deeply in regards to forgetting to reinstall my passenger pegs, and they were going to let the technician that worked on my bike go, but I asked to bring him to our meeting. I then went on to explain to the technician that it’s absolutely critical that you don’t ever let a bike leave the service area without paying an incredible amount of attention to detail, and asked the management to keep him on so that he will continue to serve the public the best of his abilities. They agreed, and the Tech was very thankful. As far as the cost of the ordeal, the Gen. Mgr. gave me a voucher for $1k for whatever I want to use it for HD wide, as well as paying to have my bike run on a Dynojet dynamometer this next weekend. So, it all worked out. I will keep everything that you all commented to me in a very special file in my memory banks. I appreciate you all a great deal. Thank you for everything. I’ll do my very best to stay close to the forum so as to give assistance or ask for it when need be. God bless you all & Godspeed. Keep the rubber side down fellaz.

You did it the right way! Sometimes it helps to enlighten management, I was very impressed with you asking to keep the tech, much respect for your handling of the situation.

I'm guessing 18 hours at whatever your shop rate is. Dealership I worked for was $125. An hour.

I hate to hear about a Harley Dealership sticking it to people, especially another Harley rider. I can't begin to tell you how many lies I have been told from the service department at Stampede.i think these guys live to lie, not live to ride. I went to the store manager over a service rep. Telling me my work would be covered, then called 2 hours later and told me the work was going to cost 3 grand. I think they were planning on splitting some pocket money. But they got caught. I absolutely hate having to go to the dealership and I have no choice but to. Good luck

Are there no independent harley shops around? I don't know how you put up with their crap. Shop around, ask around for reputable indy shops, it's not a rocket engine to work on or maintain. Hopefully you will find one, save some money and feel better about who works on your bike. Tc

That works for out of warranty bikes.
Add to it that HD has soooo many people brain washed into thinking that only their mechanics at their boutiques know how to fix their bikes.
Just like many think the product has to say HD on it to be right for their bike.
Oil, spark plugs, etc.
Their marketing was genius. Now it's just old.

I don't disagree, in warranty your pretty much stuck
Anyone can do normal maintenances even when bike is in warranty, even yourself. Nothing says you have to take it to the dealer for oil changes.

Now if something needs fixed, it would be dumb not to use the free labor and parts at the dealer to get your bike fixed.

I hope this message sets well if you can digest it. Flashy words, big experience, "how much I know about motorcycles," "who I know or am related to," or how much money I've got to throw around do not bode well in a conversation with the maintenance technicians that are about to begin work on a motorcycle. You immediately put them into a position that they have not chosen in the all to familiar roles of client and repair technician dance. You took their ability away to make recommendations, suggestions, updates. From that moment on they could simply assume you knew what was involved. Since you're so-and-so's whoever, a certified technician, dropped off a huge prepaid check, educated in everything you wanted done, bought all your own parts, etc. As a technician, you may also be aware that labor hours at a dealership are preset in the book per job. If a tech goes over they get paid only for the designated hours, and that's all you will be charged. That is HD MoCo policy. $180/hr is a mistake for living in Cali. There are better places brother. If. 'If'. If. Such a small strange little word that has so much meaning.

Usually if you bring your own parts anywhere, the book rate goes out the window to "straight time". Why, dealer not making profit ie markup on parts, and dealer didn't sell said parts, they are not obligated to replace a part you brought in if it fails, they may but don't have to. Not every dealer uses book time or the same book. There are many books for repair times and the variance is 30 to 40% higher, which is huge. Always ask before you sign. Even my indy ex harley tech isn't putting tires or parts on my bike I bought from someone else, don't blame him a bit. Shops sell parts and labor, without the profits from both they be out of business. Just food for thought.
I think it`s a cool story...
