i put the motor trike reverse on my 17 ultra limited last winter. you will love it. i'm 77 this month and was having trouble backing up. now i can park anywhere i want and easily back out. they are pricey so i won't put one on my 14 but wish it had one also. they should be std equipment on touring bikes.

Tommy's was an aftermarket kit that he installed himself.
yep. a motor trike rev kit. motor trike is the name of the aftermarket kit. the gears on the motor trike kit go on the outside of transmission. they mount on the main shaft and countershaft after removing nuts. the shift housing mounts over them and contains the gear that drives the either counter or main shaft. if it it left in reverse gear and one shifts into first gear safety switch kills the engine to prevent any damage. gears are very robust and the install is quite easy. i use it a bunch. and every time i back out of shop as well.

the motor trike is the only one i found that drove off gears mounted on the ends of the main and countershafts on the outside of transmission. that is the reason i chose it. gear driven, not motor driven. my guess is you have an early version of the motor trike kit. pop off the clutch actuation cover on top of the gear shift housing and you will see it looks like mine.
