Have a '79 Shovelhead FX - Can easily shift into 1rst and neutral but nothing higher. Shift forks? I did change the shifter linkage between shifter and tranny, but used the same length as the old linkage. Easy suggestions to try first before pulling off the top?

First, why did you change the linkage? Were you having the same shifting issue? If not then you can try this : Remove the linkage from the shifter arm it's connected to and while pulling the clutch see if you can move the arm the linkage was attached to back a notch.(2nd gear) Then try another notch.(3rd Gear) If you can then your linkage length is off. Go back to neutral and adjust your linkage. Hopefully this will resolve the issue. Good luck!

Verify the shift pattern is for the FX and not an FL. I had one like that in my shop a few years ago and didn't figure it out until I had the clutch hub half torn apart !
The FX shift pattern differs from the FL because of the FX mid controls.
