A recent model (within the last 10 years or so) with low mileage and in nice condition, not something beat up, but clean and serviceable.

What are the trouble spots to look for when checking out the bike? Are there known deficiencies that were common on this model? Are there specific areas of concern from a safety standpoint that need to be investigated?

Any troubleshooting tips for identifying bikes to run away from would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Buy a rubber mount If ya wanna ride more than 100 miles or go
faster than 65 mph without parts falling off,,,XD

Dealers are generally safe bets,,
If you have a friend that knows sportsters take em along..

So many things to check,,this thread will get busy I bet,,,,,,,,,,,

91= first year for the 5-speed, 04= first year for the rubber mounted drive train & no "trapdoor" for access to the tranny, 4.5 gallon fuel tank, 05 first year for 1" axle. as stated customs have wiring in the risers. i put 10" t-bars on my '05 1200c, wrapped wiring in a leather ponytail thingie, 07 fuel injected:think hope that gives ya some insight

I put 12" apes on my 2005 XL1200C and kept the stock riser. I don't see any problem with it. It would be nicer without it but I wanted to keep the stock speedometer.

I would def go with an 04 or newer due to the rubber mounting. I ride an 02 and honestly, the vibes don't bother me much, I've gotten used to them. Really it depends on your budget, if you want the best of the last 10 years you need to buy new. Otherwise, at least shoot for an 04 or newer, they also have a bigger tank too.

Things I'd look at:

Obviously,,any sign of a drop/crash ?

A spoked bike, I'd check each and every spoke..
Tire's,,,even with good tread I'd check the date code,
Brakes, do they work ?
Brakes, you can see the pads If ya look,
Brakes, are they spongy ?
Brakes, does the lever hit the grip ?
Brakes, are they smooth, no warped rotor's ?
Brakes, lines look perfect and not just ok but PERFECT LIKE NEW...Just sayin.

Suspension,,ok It's stock,,no rust, no oil or dirt rings ?
Spongy ?

Look Inside the tank,,,clean,,,rust ?
Oil leaks ? where ?
NOTE: If there's a big bag of Kitty Litter near the bike,,,,,think twice,,
A dime size spot or two under the bike,,,It's just markin It's turf....

Is It COLD when you walk up to It or did the seller warm It up to hide something ?????

Brble Brble Brble,,,or Potato, potato, potato,,,cool

Potato, potato,,,,,,,potato,,pop,, potata,,,,??

The dealer will let you test ride,,
That sometimes scares the crap out of a private seller,,so,,,,
SHOW UP ON A BIKE that represents your skill level.

You show up at my house In a cager you ain't riding my bike..
You show up onna Little Honda and you can ride behind me while I RIDE my bike,,

And I might let ya touch It for a dollar XD

Thar doesn't hurt, bit alot of people don't really know how to ride a bike even though they think they do.
hand them a full on brakes situation and many will fail miserably from 60-0, muchless highway speeds of 80+ to zero.

People don't realize how weird it feels doing that.

Sportster xl1200 custom cranks but wont start.

I have 2013 HD sportster xl1200 custom with 6200 miles on it. The bike is fairly new to me as I've only put 100 miles on it. It ran great those 100 miles but had the original battery in it so i decided to put new battery in it. Put new battery in and put back together (very tight fit btw). Bike cranked over and started right up. I drove it about 8 miles and had a sudden loss of power and check engine light come on. I put bike in neutral and hit off switch then coasted to a safe location. No visual damage or signs of issues. I restarted the bike and quickly realized by the sound that the front piston wasnt firing. I put my hands in front of the short shots and the exhaust coming out of the front cylinder was cool air. I loaded bike on trailer by driving onto it with one cylinder and got it home. I checked diagnostics to find the P1351 code (Front cylinder ignition driver open/low). I checked the system relay by switching with the start relay and bike still cranked over but now neither cylinders will start. So ignition coil maybe? Seems strange that this occurred right after the first time the battery was replaced. It also has the dynajet commander V chip installed. This chip has a skinny white with red stripe wire that doesnt go to anything, just stuffed in battery area. If you have any ideas, id sure like to hear them!
