Hi all,

I have a starting problem with my 2008 XL1200c. I switch the ignition on, press the Run button, and then the Start button and the engine turns over once and dies. There is a 'side stand' message on the odometer.

I'm in the UK so the bike has got a jiffy stand sensor on it. After failing to start, if I sit on the bike and put up the jiffy stands then it starts up normally. If I pull the clutch lever in a few times it seems to start up normally as well.

To my mind this seems to show that the jiffy stand sensor is working fine.

The problem seems to be that the bike is registering that it is in gear (and it is definitely in neutral, and the neutral light is on).

Can anyone shed any light onto what the problem might be here? And can anyone explain how the bike 'senses' that it is in gear?

Thanks for your help.

Never had any experience with one of these. How about cleaning the contacts for the jiffy sensor and using dielectric grease when putting em back together. Just shooting in the dark, but its an electronic gremlin ya need to find... sorry I can't help anymore than that. As stated earlier we don't have those here.

I have had this problem. 2010 883R. Bike had been in garage not ridden for about a month maybe more. So the battery was not fully charged, I started it as normal put the stand down, engine cut out with side stand message, checked to ensure it was in neutral. Tried again same thing.
Never had the problem appear again, after battery was fully charged. So I suspect it is something to do with low battery, although it does sound strange, but just my experience.

Has it been away for the winter? Or left for a while, what state is the battery likely to be in?

Thanks for your help guys. The problem got worse. Eventually the engine management light started coming on. Enough is enough so I took it back to the dealer. And the problem turned out to be...a bad connection on the positive battery cable! Oh how I hate electrical faults!

I've got it too on my 2012 Iron - I to think it could be a battery thing as it clears itself after the bike has rune for a bit! I am replacing the staock battery with a Motobatt - the current battery doesn't hold a charge for a couple of weeks in a warm(ish) garage either.

Got the similar problem on my Sporty XL1200T (2014). As it's under warranty, I am taking it in for a "standard" modification; new stand spring and adjusting the 'airgap' on the sensor. The stand flaps around when up - about 1/2 to 3/4 inch, partly due to the spindle being a loose fit in the mounting hole! Will update after it's fixed. It seems that as H-D have done a 'mod', they know all about the problem!!!
