Sportster tail light

2696 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Tommy_Guns
I have an 09 Sportster and want to change the tail light to a flat led smoke tail light. The layback replacement which is smaller but not what I am thinking of. The stock just sticks out too far for me. Any ideas?

How about the axle mount side plate tail light setup ? Of course then you'll have a bunch of empty holes in the fender. Bad idea !

Not a bad idea, but want something different and flow with the fender.
custom... flush mount type...
Issue is the guts have to go somewhere... so LED type most likely...

Most bolt on options are still "fat" even though they are angled.
Yea, those stock Harley tail lights are butt ugly. Have the same on on my wife's Sportster and my Softail. Fortunately the Softail's is set back in the fender some. Was going to change mine to a tri-bar which is flush but decided to go with the BrightAssLight tailight and blind those behind me. They do make chrome covers for the stock light so it would not look as bad sticking out there.
All good ideas, JP Cycles has flat tail lights but too small or no dimensions listed. Custom applications.

I like the looks of those Tri-bars, but I don't think they make them for my 05....

I saw a tri-bar installed on a bike at the dealers and it was not very bright. Other problem was there was really no light showing on the side anymore. Not sure that's street legal in some states. Would have to make sure the rear turn signals were always on and had red lenses.
Well, that's a bummer.
My Nephew has the layback LED from J&P on his 04 sporty, way too dim, I've warned em about it. He tried the layback with a bulb and has melted the tail light twice.
chop it and do a model a style on the lower shock mount.

I'm not super savvy on all things moto, but it sounds to me like you want something kind of like what I have (see attachment).

Problem is the design of your fender, so I have to agree... you may have to consider having the thing chopped, or buying a chopped style.

Not sure tbh, Good luck brother.
