Friday on my way to work I came up to a stop sign, a Can Am was coming down the street toward me. He had his left hand holding a cell phone to his ear. WTF

What have you seen out there?

It seems every time a do a benefit run or poker run I get behind some guy who pulls something stupid like that. The last one I went on the guy in front of me sent text messages while he was riding. After the second message I saw him trying to send I passed him and got behind a normal human being. At the first stop this guy asked if there was some kind of problem. Before I could even answer him about four people said that only an idiot would try to text while riding. I guess it is just my luck to get near these morons.

I don't ride to and from work anymore, I get to witness stupid every day on my way in. Best one so far, two cages doing about 75 in a 55, both made an very quick lane change, one cage in front of another ( guy already in that lane) the other cage in back of the cage, three cages in a row, doing 75 with about a foot between bumpers.. if that guy in the middle would have tapped his brakes, would have been a good accident.
I cannot understand anybody who thinks he/she is so important that they cannot miss a single text or cell call even when driving and especially while riding.....just how stupid does one have to be to do that?

When they wreck it'll be natural selection taking it's course.
I don't ride to work because I have to suit up everyday. However, riding during rush hour down here is Dallas or anywhere in DFW is just nuts. Texters everywhere...These people have no regard for the safety others. I think ABATE should team up with M.A.D to get some tough laws passed to where texting is just as bad as drunk driving. Also, accident victims resulting from a texer should go after the phone and car companies in their law suit just like cancer patients went after the tobacco industry. Texters cause accidents and major delays on our freeways.
In my province we may get much tougher soon!

Extract from a Press Release follows:

A proposed law aimed at curbing distracted driving in Ontario will be introduced after the legislature resumes Oct. 20. The legislation would hit drivers with the stiffest penalties in Canada for talking or texting on handheld cellphones while driving. Drivers texting behind the wheel will face fines of up to $1,000 and three demerit points under provincial legislation coming this fall.
I know here in Oklahoma for commercial vehicles, if you get caught driving and texting or talking on the phone without a hands free device, it's $2750 to the driver and I believe it's like $11,000 to the company. Really would shuck for the owner operator, but they shouldn't be doin that sh!t......
hey im a commercial driver and sometimes we need to talk on the phone. AND THERE AINT no place you just stop either. sometimes we got to talk to the place were going to in order to find them. now texting in a commercial rig is a different story. but ill stand and fight for the trucker that needs to talk on the phone. cause i know exatly how that life is. you got 18 plus wheels u need to know were your going and some of these shit holes you go to are not truck friendly trust me. its like putting a round peg into a small square hole. until you have been in one for a few years you dont know the shit we deal with out there on a daily biases . now some of them drivers are idiots i grant you. ok im done . now to the bikini's . i need to relax again.

Hey, I totally agree with you! I have been in a truck for a quarter a century. To me talking on the phone and talking on the cb ain't no different. I still pay attention to traffic and whatever might run or pull out in front of me, really it's not that hard. Guess it is for some of them know it alls. You know the kind, fresh out of a two week driving school and they already know more than either one of us.....

The need to talk on a phone does not preclude the use of a Bluetooth ear piece or similar device.

Hell, a lot of vehicles nowadays you can make a Bluetooth connection to your stereo system and use that with an integrated microphone imbedded in the vehicle for phone communications.

I certainly agree something needs to be done. However, passing laws is not the answer. We already have laws against careless driving, reckless driving, etc., etc. First thing to do is to quit calling all wrecks "accidents". If someone was texting or putting on makeup or reading the paper the wreck they caused was due to their intentional disregard of basic safety and their intentional lack of attention to piloting their deadly missile safely. A serious wreck with serious injuries or death calls for serious felony charges and serious time in the slammer. When society has had enough of clueless, thoughtless, careless and dangerous drivers hurting/killing people and you start reading about felony convictions and prison sentences 95% of the problem will go away.
Riding on I 75 in Detroit looked over at the car next to me and the guy had no steering wheel but had a monkey wrench holding on to the steering nut. For those that don't know a monkey wrench will only really tighten in one direction.

That's effed up

Got the Bluetooth ear piece, figured a hunnered or so is a hell of a lot cheaper than a ticket and the points on my record.
You know, it seems like with the seemingly unlimited electro-technical capability, the developers could come up with a way that the texting transmissions could only be enabled if the device is stationary. Smart phones can do an unbelievable amount of tasks, why not that? That--or any other idea that would defeat mobile texting.

The problem with that is there is no issue for passengers of a vehicle, subway, bus, train, etc to text.

It's a damn shame we have to consider additional technology to defeat certain technologies we have now. All because some have no regard for the safety of others. Those who text while on the road are the same ones that will find other distractions that keep them from concentrating on their driving.
