Tachometer installation?

Hello Team:

Please can you guys help with this?

Go this Tachometer from eBay and trying to make it work on my 2008 Softail Rocker (FXCW)

It only came with 3 wires: Red (pos), Black (neg) & pink (signal?) I attach the positive to the lights fuse and the pink to the coil front cylinder, according to the service manual is the blue/orange cable all the way to the right:

When I start the bike it immediately shuts off. If I disconnect the pink cable bike starts fine.

I am aware all TwinCams are single fire. How do I know if the tachometer was made for dual fire? (Evo's).

Tank you very much.

I'm pretty sure your bike uses a 7 wire tach. I went through the same thing with my 06 police RK. Just a coincidence, I was talking to Mr. SCSPARTAN about this not 45minutes ago. Best of luck.:)

I think it comes from a Harley-Davidson from the 90's.
I also bought a 3wire tach off ebay, as that was all I've ever known. Dealer techs said it would work before I bought it. Well it wouldn't. So I bought a new 7wire tach and wiring harness to plug into the main harness. If I remember correctly, new tach and harness was about $238.00, without bracket, which you already have. The tach harness that came from Harley was wired wrong and blew my abs module. The dealer techs scratched their heads to make the 3wire work with no success. I think the 3wire is for early models, the 7wire is for later models. I don't remember the cut off year. I don't know anything except what I experienced. But I went through the same thing. I know there are people on here that are much more knowledgeable on the particulars. I had a thread on this awhile back if you can find it. I hope this sheds a little light on the subject. I wish you the best. Good luck. :)
Update

I MADE IT WORK!! :ride

I redo the installation and now the tach works.

The pink cable got connected to the front cylinder coil. Blue/orange cable all the way to the right in the picture.

I guess I left something off last night. It does not help that last night I was doing this at 1:00AM.

Going for a ride to test it.

Thanks for all the input and ideas!

Right on! You did what the dealership could not. Congratulations, glad it worked out for you. Do you have abs? :)
Frack!! Disregard my last post! :(

It didn't work! Went for a test ride and it never went above 2000RPM's. Obviously is not compatible. Now to remove everything and put wires to original state.

Any alternatives tachometers besides the HD? $315.00 is kinda expensive for me.

:thanks

Wow! They have really gone up, or maybe they were including the bracket. I think it was $120.00 or so. The tach will slide out of the housing, which you already have. I'm trying to find my old post. I was as stoked as you when I thought you had figured it out. The dealer techs scoured the schematics trying to make the 3wire to work. To save face if nothing else, since they told me it would work beforehand, but it was a no go. On the bright side I paid alot less for the 3wire tach with bracket/housing than HD wanted for the bracket. The tach can be bought separately.
Have you checked Barron?

https://baronscustom.com/catalog/category/24/index.html

I have one off my 04 Road King, been meaning to mount it to the 13 RK but just never got around to it. Nice tach, great quality.

This is the one I have....I think it's $199.00.

Just for kicks and grins I took the Tachometer apart. Is made in Japan! Go figure.

What means 1SPARK/REV?

One spark per revolution?

Is not all that bad. I learn a lot in the process and became more familiar with the bike. Got to study the electric schematics of the bike and the only thing that I found related to the Tach signal was "serial data". I guess that's where the new tachs get the RPM's signal.

Sorry for the confusion I mean the Digital combination speedo & tach.:

Mine has a 7 pin connector. Techs still pulled their hair out with it. Best of luck. Smitty's advice on my police tach post may be of help to you. I most certainly am not a mechanic, just remember it gave the techs a fit.
Ha!! I found this: TACHOMETER ADAPTER

http://www.baroncustom.com/catalog/display/243/index.html

I bet the Tachometer is dual-fire ignition.
my barron tach came with the adapter
