I have an 08 road king with a 96 cubic inch motor and a 6 speed transmission. little over 74,000 miles. just did an oil change. before hand I had noticed a ticking noise that seems to be coming from under the tank and only at the top of the gear when I drop off the throttle and the motor is winding down. I'm not sure if I need a lifter adjustment or if something more serious is happening.

Im No expert mechanic but there's a lot of things that could tick in the rockers boxes ,do you have solid push rods adjustable push rods ,
Could possibly be an exhaust leak
I've had other motors that an exhaust leak has created a tick ,
Did you check your oil for metal chips ? Head gasket leak ,sorry I'm not more help but a few things to think about ...

Good chance it's the rocker shafts rotating in their bosses. Look for "Rocker Locker" aftermarket fix.

at 74000 miles I would change lifters - just to be safe
