I have a 2014 FLHTK with 14,000K on it. Last year I started noticing a tinging type noise, not sure where it is coming from. The best way I can describe it is sounds like when you shut the bike off, the sound the exhaust makes when it is cooling only much louder. When I first heard it I had thought maybe it was rocks hitting the fender but it is not. It does it when it is hot outside and the bike is hot and I notice it mostly around 2500 to 3000 rpm of when riding two up or if I get on it a little bit. It does not happen when the bike is in neutral even if revved to higher RPM's and seems to be around 2nd and third gear. I posted to a local forum and had a few people tell me it sounds like the compensator. I took it to Harley and they told me they could not hear the noise but my gear shifter was loose and all they could hear is the rattle form that. they fixed that but it is still doing it. It is beginning to get louder. any suggestions would be helpful.

Doubt it's the compensator. Sounds more like preignition that happens with a hot motor and when you put it under load. Is the bike stock or do you have some kind of tuner or other mods that have been done? More info, please.

Just tad curious here, but is it possible you accidentally filled the tank with regular gas?

No, stock except for slip ons, only run sunoco, 93 octane, also this has been going on since last year, have filled many times and I don’t believe i have ever put in anything else but sunoco since i purchased. I had thought about preignition however it does not quite like that but similar, but then again i am used to hearing preignition in cars.

knocking in an air cooled engine is a lot louder than in water cooled engines.(no water jackets to damp the sound)
