Beautiful Sunday, clear, sunny, temps hitting 70 or so by the time I headed out early afternoon. Just a normal, relaxing ride in the adjacent mostly rural county. Well, not long into my ride I realized the Ironman event was today. And those damn bicycles like the same routes I do. So, there were a couple of places where a roadblock made me turn the way I didn't want to go but with some doubling back I was getting where I wanted to go and I was going out and the bikes were coming in. Never saw so many bicycles. Not hundreds, but thousands.

So I'm on a 2 lane main highway, US 42, out in the country so to speak, heading East and the bikes are going West. I get to another roadblock, I'm behind a Lotus sports car. No other traffic going West and no traffic oncoming from the East except said bicycles. At this particular roadblock they stop me about 50-60 feet behind the Lotus. Looks like all they were doing was trying to space out any traffic so they let the Lotus pull up to where 4 cops are standing and he stops there. After maybe 2 minutes they let the Lotus go and waved me up to stop where the Lotus had been stopped. Oh, and when the Lotus got the signal to go he tried to show off a little, but man was it pathetic. Anyway, I pull up to where they say stop and a cop says to me "When we tell you to go, you GO!" And another cop says "I sure hope you can perform better than that last guy". That's all I needed to hear. Maybe a minute or so later one cop says"GO". Just as soon as I came off the line I nailed it and redlined the first 3 gears but eased off before I redlined 4th cause I was already way over the 55 limit. I know they got the full effects of my true duals Rineharts. It was truly one of those moments that were priceless.

Always liked Harleys better that Lotus anyway. And I know those pipes did the job, Joe.

It sounds like the leo wasn't liking being at that event any more than you Joe. How many flew off their bicycles when you cracked the throttle ?

I didn't notice any falling off, but a few of those bicycle seats may have gotten stained.

And today's paper said there were 2,538 Ironman participants. I think I saw every one of them on their bikes.

they do one of those bike things here in Tucson every year. They ride a 112 mile course that just goes every way that gets in your way. There are 1000's of them , too. I guess they are having fun. Looks like work to me.

From an article in today's paper I learned the Ironman competition here yesterday consisted of a 2.4 mile swim in the river (beginning at 7:30 am), then a 110 mile bike ride through parts of 3 counties, then the running marathon--can't remember how many miles that was. The winner did it all in 8 hours and some odd minutes. I couldn't do all of that in a week if my life depended on it!

That's cool. They were probably bored out of their minds with that job. I got pulled over once in my 1976 Corvette. I new I wasn't speeding so didn't have a clue why he pulled me over. All the officer did was ask me all kinds of questions about the car. What size engine, etc. I'm guessing he either liked the car or was resolving an argument with his partner. Cops have fun personalities too. :smile

Love them bicyclists! First porker run of the year back in April, In the hills on country 2 lane roads, we come upon a left turn that we need to make and there are people in the middle of the road with their back to us holding up signs. Along come 2 escort motorcycles, 30 - 50 bicycles, and a support van turning onto the road that we need to go on. 50+ motorcycle following the support van down this really nice (would have been at a normal riding speed) twisty road following a clear water stream for 5 miles! Fortunately, at the T and the other end of the road, they turned right while we turned left. I'm not sure they knew what to think with all of us cracking the throttles and constantly threatening to pass the bunch of them.
