I bought a 1997 Dyna Wide 5 years ago...I am an electrician by trade and have bought the manual for the Dyna family. First ..I have to replace the battery every year. (I do forget the put the tender on at times) ..In the last 2 years I have gone out and started the bike and it will run all day But ! at times I would start it and it would run for a few minutes and shut off...go completely dead. In the last year it has become progressively worse. I set up my multimeter and have found it to be the ignition circuit breaker tripping. After a few seconds the breaker resets as its suppose to. within this circuit are emergency stop and start switch near the throttle grip. Leaving there to the ignition module and ignition coil. There were some after market mini ape handle bars installed (before I bought it. I have removed removed the ignition coil and module from the circuit . At times i will get 15 meg ohm reading then it clears... this is not a california bike so no trap door solenoid......... any ideas?

This sounds to me to be a charging system problem. Maybe stator, rotor or regulator. An electrician should be able to troubleshoot a 12 volt DC charging system an a motorcycle !
First a good battery then check the alternator and regulator system. Basic DC 101 automotive electronics !

OK !! I think I found the problem. The circuit breaker that powered the Ignition circuit kept tripping..someone put a set of ape hanger handle bars on the DYNA (before I bought it)and there is a shorted wire that goes to the stop switch through the handle bars..NOW the trick is getting the wiring out of the handle bars...LOL
