Engine serial number. Please help

Hi,

I bought a beauty last week in Berlin, Germany. A superb custom bike, with a Penz frame, Lightcon rims and what appears to be an 1340 Evo engine. After two years of chemo I beat cancer, so I figured I could treat myself to a new set of wheels :)

As I live in The Netherlands, I went to the Dutch DMV to import the bike. Everything seemed ok, but then the guy started to make some remarks about the serial number on the engine.

He said it looked as if it was hand stamped on there and that he'd never seen that before.

The German DMV (called TUV) is very strict. You even have to get your bike checked out every two years. So the numbers in the paperwork all checked out 100%.

Lucky for me, recently some idiot biker builders in The Netherlands had been changing engine blocks without getting proper stamps from the Dutch DMV. And it turned out a lot of engines were actually from stolen bikes. So my bike was not approved and I have get some extra research done in two weeks time.

I know bikes, I love Harley Davidson, but I'm a newbie when it comes to HD engine serial numbers. Can some of you experts help me out?

(1) When you look at the picture below, does it look like a proper HD engine serial number?

(2) The custom bike was build in 2003, in Germany with a Penz frame and an engine from another HD bike. This is mentioned in the official German documents. So the engine is probably older.

Were engine serial numbers every stamped like on the picture?

(3) I've tried to check the meaning of the code. 'BM' should stand for the FLSTF model, the 'L' should stand for 1340 EVO and the 'N' for 1992. Is that correct?

(4) The guy at the Dutch DMV even asked me if the engine is really a Harley engine. Is it?

(5) Is it possible to get the engine serial number checked out by Harley?

Thanks for you input and help..!

Kind regards,

Björn

Greetings from the Left Coast. Engine looks HD to me. If engine came from Harley they should have way check serial number. Try going to your nearest HD dealer for help. Good luck.

1981 and newer are 17 digit VINs. This is an Evo engine, 1984-1999.

This only has 10 digits...

It's missing the three digits prior, of "1HD".

1970 to 1980 is a 10 digit number, but starts with a number then a letter.

IE: "1A........"

So even if the lower cases were Shovelhead, the numbers still aren't correct.

The stars (open) on the outer endges "appear" to be Harley, but the numbering and amount of numbers are not correct.

Yes, BM = FLSTF, however, there's digits prior to that which are not there, and without them, it's not verifiable.

1HD was a "world manufacture" code that meant it was sold in the US... BUT, it should have a 5HD which means "for sale outside of the US".

These guys were in the same boat. Seems this happens a lot.

There are a few possibilities to your plight.

It could be a crate motor, therefore, not having a frame to match, it wouldn't get the 1HD, 5HD, 932, or MEG stamping.

The other possibility is this: Some 1979 engines had totally different numbers. This was a factory idea that was quickly changed after they were notified that it made the bikes look stolen to some law enforcement agencies. The production date range is 1/9/79 - 2/7/79, and the frame VINs affected are or should be 43000H9 through 48199H9. The "crankcase number" is reported to be a ten digit numeric ID. So, your bike could have shovel cases that fell into this time-frame.

The consensus seems to be though that case numbers don't have the 1HD, 5HD etc... that the frame has.

All in all, the lesson to be learned here is that no matter how sweet the deal is you should ALWAYS check the numbers on a bike before you buy it. Because if it is stolen, you won't get your money back.

Look at this site too. And maybe show the guys at the motor vehicle place some of this info.

There's two things I would do. Call HD and verify it and have them send you paperwork... and if they can't do that I would start calling S&S, RevTech, etc... to see if they stamp replacement cases like that in order to make the motors match the frame for paperwork purposes. I never messed with anything other than HD motors so i don't know how the others do those things.

Hi Mate, I was having the same sort of problem, If you look on the left side of the primary where the engine case joins depending on the year, There is a stamped 10 digit vin code, This is also on a metal sticker on the forks it will be something like 1851 239 029, Then google the number and it will tell you what the numbers denote..

The numbers on an engine are not a VIN, they are a serial number.

Don`t confuse a serial number of a component with the Vehicle Identification Number.

A VIN is stamped on the frame of the motorcycle.
