Front sprocket Nut

I'm getting conflicting info on if the front sprocket nut on a 2005 FLH is left or right hand thread? The Clymer manual says left but other info I read said right ?

As stated in instructions:

Used on all '06 and later Dyna models and '07 and later Softail
and Touring models with 5-speed transmissions and Screamin'
Eagle 6-speed upgrade transmissions.

5-speeds didn't come in 2007-up big twin models.

So yes, 2005 is lefty-loosie, righty-tightie.

The clutch hub is lefthand thread.

The sprocket is right hand thread. Hence the lock nut retaining plate.

Clymer is also not written by Harley.

I can show you countless inconsistencies in that book.........cause it's written by people that don't work on Harleys.

The instructions I posted are Harley.




** Put bike in 3rd gear.

Have friend hold rear brake.

Use breaker bar.

An impact actually works better.

Thanks Thunder-Struck it was the first one way cheaper than the one from JIMS just ordered it hopefully it will get here in enough time to get it done I have a ride scheduled for the 7th
:thumbsup Knew $150 was way high. Picked the second one up for myself a while back.

The front sprocket nut on the transmission for a
2005 Big Twin is a LEFT HAND THREAD.

All 5 speed big twin transmissions have left hand threads for the front pulley nut.

Another way to hold the transmission to untorque the nut:

Remove the transmission top cover

Remove the shifter drum

Move the shifter forks until the transmission is in two gears at one time, this will lock the transmission.

Untorque the nut, remember, it is a LEFT HAND THREAD.

Yes, by moving the shift forks to engage two gears at the same time, the transmission will be locked.

That is the method that was called out in the service manuals before the factory came out with the holding tool.

Ok well I got it all back together but of course it leaks I put different fluid in the tranny in case this happened I would know where it was coming from and it's coming from the primary pretty sure is the inner main shaft seal but it's brand new it running down the back side of the inner primary and dripping off of the bottom. I used a James set on it has anyone had problems with their seals? I couldn't get their inspection or derby gasket to seal either and went with OE on those. It is just going to suck if I have to pull it all back apart because of their crappy seal.

Would too much fluid in the case cause this?
