Maybe we should start a back pain club here. My back hurts sitting in my easy chair. I just try to live with it along with sore neck, ringing ears, numbing fingers/hand and so on. My strategy is :seehearspeak
Yup...... throw in a tumor and partial kidney removal..... describes me pretty well.
 
Yep, I have/get lower back pain. I took pain pills for years. Got off all that. My back rest on my bike gives me something to lean into and press into. Without it, all my weight would be pressing down. Makes a huge difference. I’ve done a couple of iron butt rides, my longest was 1576 miles in less than 24 hours on my WG. Could not have done that without my back rest.
 
I've heard good things about the full spectrum CDB oil, but haven't tried it myself yet.

It's not as effective as they would like you to believe. Pricey too.

I did read it, but personal experience says it doesn't work on pain as advertised. I do have a sharp pain in my thumb that flares up once in a while and rubbing the oil on does help a little. Orally? doesn't do a thing. My back pain doesn't change even with heavy doses. I don't sleep better either. I don't bother with it any more.

Jim the link I posted was meant to co sign that there is no conclusive evidence that it works not that it does work.
It says more studies need to be done on humans as it was tested on animals.

Last I read, pretty much it's no more effective than tylenol or something, as far as pain.

Not to get political (I'm actually in favor of recreational legalization for adults as soon as they can figure out an intoxication test for drivers), but I think the "medical" stuff is a little bogus, and I don't like the medical push because there's a lot of false info in both directions and innocent people can get taken in (like people giving it to their kids). If someone properly educated still wants to go a hippy mother Gaia "natural" route or whatever as an adult, then more power to them.

Anyway there was some doctor that had a blog that pretty much ripped it to shreds. It was a very long, 5 or 6 part series that looked at a lot of stufies. Of course it was dry and scientific. But one thing they found was lab synthesized rather than natural was much more effective. He also talked about a study of people with brain tumors where they drilled holes in their heads and drip fed highly concentrated marijuana extract through catheters directly in the tumors and it had no effect on them. Anyway, with the rise of it and all the pseudo hippies my age claiming it cures everything and is the panacea of the gods or whatever and that it's totally safe, blah blah blah pushed a lot of this and now that it's legal, they found there's a lot of ER visits from people that have pretty bad reactions to it, something called CHS (cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome): https://americanaddictioncenters.org/marijuana-rehab/cannabinoid-hyperemesis-syndrome

Anyway, there's all that aside from today's marijuana not being your grandfather's marijuana and it being way more potent than ever. Plus, they've done testing at medical dispensers before that shows a lot of the claims (like when they say "low THC/high CBD") for particular strains are wildly inaccurate and often wrong, as well as there being wide inconsistencies among particular strains.
 
My neighbor uses CDB for back pain and says it helps......:dunno Course I tell her it's all in her mind..... she responds no you idiot it's in my back! But you know she is 86!
 
Back on the subject though, backrests are great.

A TENS unit is also great, but you can't use one if you have a pacemaker or defibrilator. I have one and use it all the time because I'm prone to stiff muscles and bad muscle cramps (drug-induced parkinsonism). They're also pretty inexpensive. There's also a deep muscle portable ultrasound thing which is more expensive, and you need someone that knows what they're doing to work it so they don't burn you, but that was the best part of physical therapy after my accident.

Another thing that's great is yoga. As lame as I feel doing yoga, it does help a lot with core strength and stretching. That ex-wrestler, Diamond Dallas Page, has a yoga program that's a little more manly and resistance and not any of that "breathe through your third eye and feel your chakras align" bs. I haven't tried it yet. My wife has, she hates yoga, but she likes the DDP Yoga.

Another back pain story. I've had trouble for years, lower back. When I took long rides on the Sportster it would get to a point where I'd just have to get off. I bought a tour pack for a long trip, and bungee corded it to the passenger portion of the seat, low and behold the relief of a back rest. So when I got the King it was a no brainer to leave the backrest on. .but after 200 miles that seat would be so painful, I'd have to call it a day. Got an air hawk, inflated it to max. I can ride 600 miles plus no issues. Just two years ago I had my seat done by mean city to get rid of the air hawk. Soooo long story short to solve my lower back issues, it was a combination of back rest and seat work.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. It seems the consensus is adding a back rest. But......I really hate how they look on riders seats ?. I know I know its about function and not show. I'm realizing though it isn't just the bike. I wear a utility belt and drive an emergency vehicle 10hrs a day and that also is starting to take a toll on my back so the issue goes deeper than the bike. I know part of it is also poor posture but besides continuing to workout (changing up somethings as I'm getting older), and looking into a back brace, my plans for the bike are to at least start with a new seat and curved handle bar risers that bring the bars up and back.

I hear the built in back support of the sundowner is pretty good? I would prefer a lower seat though. If in the end nothing works I'll suck it up and try an actual backrest. Wish I knew someone with one to test out first.

Most backrests are removable so you can have the look until its time to ride.

You never know, city/state in your info may help.

I suppose that you could always rent a bike with a backrest and remove it for part of the day.

Now you know why so many bikers in those old pictures are wearing kidney belts.
No, the reason for those back then was because the frames had no shock absorption of any kind. Hardtails were hard on the rider *and* the bike parts because the vibration of the motor and the road made things come loose often and the kidney belt was needed by *some* people because of the harsh ride. I personally never needed one and don't personally know anyone who did, but I did see some people throughout my years wear them when riding hardtails.
