Red Leight On Speedometer

Wanted to share my story. Was riding along and the red light cam on same as below. I had just changed my oil myself and was self conscious that there was an issue. Pulled over and checked everything. No issues I could find whatsoever. Went off for a few miles and then came back on once again. Pulled over and rechecked everything. No issues. Decided to take a chance and get home. Made it home without any issues. Oil was fine. Did some research on the internet and found this forum. Just like the guy below it was a light issue. Come to find out it was my brake light that was not making connection. Cleaned everything and reconnected all. Light is gone for now. Will update accordingly.

Just purchased an 883 Iron yesterday and this light came on! ???

Thanx for the reassurance that it's probably something minor - due to a service..

There's two "fault" lights. Red Key = something wrong with your security or lighting. Orange engine = C.E.L. check engine light, something wrong with the engine or electronics. Codes can be read by owner and researched on line. Youtube will show you all.

"why do I bother? "

Hello All,

I was on a group ride today. I have a 2012 Dyna Wide Glide. 40 miles into my ride the red indicator light on the speedometer turns on. I'm like, WTF over!?!?! So I am frantically looking, listening, touching (ouch! thats F'ing hot!), for anything that could be causing this, am I the only person that will imagine hearing problems that are not there? Anyways, we get to our destination, the light is still lit, but my scoot has not self-destructed or melted on the side of the road. I am checking my fuel pak connections to the ecm, the fuel pak codes, anything! I find nothing. The bike sounds fine and is running fine. I text my son in law who has a friend who used to be a parts manager for the local Harley dealer, he says its the security system, I dont have a security system, LOL.

After leaving the destination to start heading home, we stop for gas. Another rider notices that my low beam is out, but my high beam works, his wife makes a comment, maybe thats why the light is lit, I'm like, haha, that would be a neat trick! Well, it turns out, that is the case! I had turned off my bike with the switch in high beam position, when turning on the ignition, after the initial "all lights on" on the speedometer goes out, the red light is not coming back on, switch the light switch to low beam, and the light comes on!

Replaced the light and no more red light! Follwed up with a mechanic from HD, this is a function of the BCM "Body Control Module".

Sorry about being long winded, but I thought that I should definitely share this info!
Dude I just pulled off the highway and out front of a Waffle House getting ready to have a full blown panic attack. I’m like do all the right shit. How is my bike just gonna blow up . Your post was the 1st thing I read after pulling my head out of my ass. Ass soon as I read this i started laughing like a crazy person. These people at the Waffle House have to think I’m a hot mess. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be sure to pass it along.

You're responding to a eight year old post! But that is a GOOD ONE!

But what if all my lights work 15mi into a 60mi trip and it won't go off I'll try the diagnostic to see if it prompts a code but my body is saying it won't with the lights all working??🤔🤔
Security system ?
Make, model, year, miles is good info to include with your post !

I thought that everyone knew this by now, but I will put it here since this thread popped up. Even if you do not have a security system on the bike, that red light can come on when you change out the headlight to an LED one. It happened on my 2019 Iron 1200 with no security system. It has something to do with the current draw being lower now and HD said to not worry about it. That is why it will come on security system or not. I didn't research any further into it since it is a non-issue, and I traded the bike for a Softail anyway. I put the stock halogen back into the Sportster before I traded it so now the red light will not be on anyway.

Yea I had to get the module from custom dynamics. What’s crazy is led headlight never triggered it. Led tail and brake light and it was fine. But as soon as I’d hit the signal then redlight till I cycled the ignition. Got the module that plugs under the seat and it’s been fine

Ya know what, the MoCo told the dealer service depts. early on that the BCM would solve all those trouble code problems. It's been 10 years now with the same DTCs from the BCMs, 10 years ! The late model Harley owners with models equipped with BCMs do not have an alternative, take the bike to a Harley dealer for service is all.
I have a truck and a car that I can plug my generic OBDll into the port under the dash to read codes, reset the oil change light and check system diagnostics. It works on all domestic vehicles ... EXCEPT Harleys ?
I'm almost getting to be an Un-Harley fan, that's a crazy thought !

What year did the bcm come into play?

My 2015 wideglide has the same issue with the light coming on intermittently. I find that if i push the front brake handle forward with my fingers, that the light will go out. Sometimes for a couple of minutes or other times till the end of the ride. havent dug into any codes it might be throwing.

Check you error codes That little lite is telling you something is wrong with the bike. With the Ignition switch off, put the bike into the "run" position, then turn on the ignition. This should put your bike into diagnostics mode. Use the "Trip" switch to cycle through the codes. I got an "ECM N" (no ecm issue....good) "BCM Y" - ut oh, body control module issue. code b2161 (brake light circuit) Sure enough, i hit the brakes and the brake light does not go on. Instead of it being the activating switch, HD said my BCM itself was bad. It is on back order til 10/23. (Under warranty) anyway....that red light means check your codes!
I did what you said to look for codes, but it did nothing at all

I agree completely. I can fix my 68 flh shovelhead, 98 Heritage, 06 Ultra Classic but this 2014 ultra classic EFI BCM ECM can bus Crappy engineering POS has lost me as a fan of HD corporation.

Do you have a BMC-Y code
LED draws different voltage Probably need a load equalizer on the high beam is my guess
