reverse kits

Hi, not been here for a while... things have changed a bit. I bought an FLHT about 6 months ago, my first HD ever (Guzzi's before) Sadly, we are parting ways. No fault of the bike, it's me and my buggered knee. STILL waiting on a surgeons appt to even see if he will replace it. So, I worked out a deal with the shop and I am swapping in for a 2009 FLHR It has a reverse kit fitted.
I know a mate who broke his (sheared the brass pin) I've been told different ways you are supposed to operate this gear.
Engage, start bike, reverse, turn off bike, disengage (straight cut gears, no synchro?)
Or, just start it, put into gear, move it, but make sure you disengage (obviously) before selecting first. My problem is I have to reverse my bikes out of the garage, onto a gravel drive that is narrow, so have to turn them somewhat to face toward the roadway. So this reverse will be a real boon in reducing knee ache.
So those who have the reverse kit, your thoughts please?
Oh and Merry Xmas to all

Can you back it into the garage?

Keith
would still be 'reversing' on gravel, plus the garage entry 'lip'. so not really a feasible thing (the drive is just wide enough to jam two small cars side by side). My knee is rooted, arthritis and partially torn ACL from many years ago. So it's kinda unstable anyway.

Well looking at the pics in here, the lever position on the transmission,,, it looks like mine is a 'Baker kit'? Lever is at the 'opposite end' to the Trike reverse in Tommy's picture. I'm picking it up after the 6th Jan, they are Japanese market 'imports' the shop brings over.

I put one on my 17 Street Glide and another on my friends 17 RG, used Baker. Absolutely loved them. (I was 65, he was 69). They guy that has my SG now tells me every time he sees me how much he likes it. If I do another one I would go with MotorTrike, local shop here does them for about $1800, takes 3-4 hrs labor. The Bakers we bought at Sturgis "rally special" were around same money but took me about 8 hrs each, plus had to buy some new bushings, and a primary kit (over $100 each) plus a few special tools I haven't used again. Both have an electric interlock to prevent going into reverse accidentally. I'm thinking about adding one to my Heritage now.
ok I'm not sure how? But my mate who bought a 2011 103 FLTHC broke his reverse (brass shear pin) think he left it in reverse, and then selected first. Ooooops. (been fixed now). if the kits (Baker or?) are different to the HD trike reverse unit,,, I'll have to hope that option A as advised by C.Me is the correct one,,,,,

thanks for any/all thoughts guys, there aren't very many solo bikes with reverse around in NZ, I guess the Japanese had them fitted due to physical stature/leg strength.

Baker does not use a lever. Thier kit requires the transmission to be taken apart, a new shift drum and reverse gear installed, and reinstall trans. To shift into reverse, you shift from neutral to first, depress an interlock switch (mounted on bars), then downshift from first to reverse.
thank you for that, so can I assume HD did two models/versions of the reverse kit? The levers are definitely in two different spots on the two bikes.... (why I assumed a baker kit)

This might be what you have, I've not seen one with the lever on the front before. Chrome Reverse Gear Clutch For Harley Touring Electra Street Glide 2014-2020 | eBay
Hi JC
yup that looks to be the kit...... It's a Japanese import to NZ, there are quite a few the dealer brings in in the Ultra/Tour line with a reverse fitted, this has been the only Road King/unfaired bike with it fitted. Used it a few times now, bloody love it, makes reversing into my drive a doddle.
