The wife and I are planning a trip to PCB, FL for Thunder Beach. We'll be leaving EARLY on the 3rd, and coming back on the 6th. I'm riding my Dyna, and the wife will be driving the SUV. The route from my place takes me about 80 miles of interstate until I hit montgomery, where I pickup HWY 9/281, then HWY 87, then HWY 81 to 79 into PCB. I'm wondering what type of roads I'll be on after I get off the interstate. I am hoping it isn't all backroads (as in 2 lane 45mph roads). I like backroads, but I want to make good time. I'm under the assumption that it is a 4 lane road, kinda like HWY 280 (if you are familiar with Central Alabama, you know 280.

I'm sure there's some riders on here who head down through Birmingham to PCB that are familiar with the roads that can give me a good idea of what to expect. I'm hoping to be out the door as the sun comes up, and make it to PCB by lunchtime. Looks like it will be a 5 hour trip, minus gas/bathroom stops.

Pell City checking in, we are riding down Saturday 4/28 or Sunday 4/29 depending on weather.
Last time I was on hwy 9/331 it was most definately 2 lane back roads with max speed limit of 55mph with plenty of small communities to slow you you to the 35/45mph range. Was not sure how far south you were traveling on 9/331 before cutting over to 87. We normally take 231 to Montgomery, hit a little bypass road then continue on 231 to Troy. Take 167 out of Troy through Enterprise to Florida state line where it becomes Hwy 79 which is a straight shot to PCB.

Here is my suggestion, since you do not mind the Interstate take I 65 to Montgomery, take I 85 toward Atlanta, take exit #9 which will be hwy 271/Taylor Rd, Taylor Rd will take you to hwy 231, to Troy on 231, 167 through Enterprise cross state line and stay on 79 to PCB.

Why this route, I 85 and hwy 271 gets you to the other side of Montgomery with the least amount of traffic lights, 231 to Troy is 4 lanes and mostly 65mph. Once you hit 167the roads are 2 lane but the majority is 55mph, just watch for the local LEO's they also know it's bike week.

No matter what route you take be safe and have fun.

btw....we'll have to meet up one day. Check out this Bama Rides - Index
