Hello,
2002 FXD Twin Cam 88, 43k miles.
I was out on the hi-way for about 15 minutes, stopped for gas. When I turned over the starter I got a nasty grinding noise. I have also been hearing some rattling when at low rpm. Can reproduce with bike in neutral or in gear with clutch pulled. Bike runs through the gears fine and pulls hard like it should.
I was thinking a bad/loose compensator.
I pulled off the primary cover and looked at compensator, nothing obvious. It is the original factory setup I put the torque wrench on there at 165lbs and got a click so the nut seems to be tight. There was no play in the front sprockets.
It seems like the compensator is OK. Is there anything else I can do to determine if that compensator is bad?
Anything else I should check that can cause loud grinding noise on warm start?
