So if the plug between the shocks drains the transmission, what about the plug under the transmission? And the plug under the engine? Now you guys are confusing me. Also, I pull all the above mentioned plugs before I fill anything. So.... There should not be anything running dry. Of course now I am second guessing and thinking I better check when I get home. Anyways, I will look for the plug you mention that sits under the oil tank.

Service manual has photos of all plugs as well as detailed instructions. Best $50 and first $50 you can/should spend.

I just found a YouTube video about an oil change on a softail deluxe. Same frame as my fatboy, same engine. The guy showed a drain plug in the right rear corner of the frame. The same spot you guys tried to describe to me. Still not sure what the plug under the engine is for if not for oil.

You should really purchase a service manual if you're planning on doing your own maintenance. By not doing maintenance properly you can end up with big $$$ repair bills.

I only know I remove the plug that the owners manual says to remove. The one that sits between the rear shocks! Judging by your initial answers, there is another way I am supposed to drain it?

The plug between the two rear shocks is the trans drain. The engine oil drain is the brass colored plug on the left end of the cross member at the rear of the shocks. It has a rubber hose attached on top of the cross member. You will get 3 qts out of the oil tank. Don't forget to refill your transmission.

I watched one of those videos and I have to admit, I've never seen anyone put teflon tape on a drain plug.

Just sayin'...

If he damaged the o-ring he may have had to use the Teflon tape to help with leaks.... But nope he shouldn't have to use Teflon tape on oil plug. If o-ring is damaged just replace it.

Have a friend who has had several Harleys over the years and has seen on quite a few bikes where someone has put on some stuff like plumbers dope or some chit!! on the threads of drain plugs..he said he didn't see any evidence of bad threads and he thinks people do it to be safe????

I believe the service manual specifies a teflon thread sealer be used.
