Don`t be confused.

All 5 speed big twin transmissions have left hand threaded pulley nuts.

Turn it clockwise to loosen.

Ok and you are saying by locking the tranny it will not allow the pulley to turn or transfer force to the rear wheel? I would hate to dig into the tranny and not be able get it back to where it needs to be once I get the nut off lol

Yes, by moving the shift forks to engage two gears at the same time, the transmission will be locked.

That is the method that was called out in the service manuals before the factory came out with the holding tool.

You are 100% correct Dan. Sorry fedman28.

Ok well I got it all back together but of course it leaks I put different fluid in the tranny in case this happened I would know where it was coming from and it's coming from the primary pretty sure is the inner main shaft seal but it's brand new it running down the back side of the inner primary and dripping off of the bottom. I used a James set on it has anyone had problems with their seals? I couldn't get their inspection or derby gasket to seal either and went with OE on those. It is just going to suck if I have to pull it all back apart because of their crappy seal.

Would too much fluid in the case cause this?

Did you replace the inner primary race on the mainshaft (the part that actually runs inside the seal on the inner primary cover)?

Ok so I picked up a new seal from HD the loosening of the belt didn't work bad seal I guess. So far all the gaskets and seals from James gasket have leaked where the HD gaskets didn't ? waste of time and money on the James gaskets.

The new HD inner primary seal is installed backwards from most seals which is making me second guess the starter shaft seal installation. Can anyone confirm the correct side to put toward the primary on the starter shaft seal ?

Come on now, don`t try and tell us James gaskets are no good, we know better. James is one of the companies that forced the Motor Company to wake up to modern gasket design. James makes excellent gaskets and seals.

The open cupped side faces toward the primary on the new design seals that came out around `05.

I don't know what to tell you. The main outer primary gasket didn't leak but both the inspection cover and derby cover gasket leaked like crazy. Then I installed their seals and now that's leaking. I don't know what else to say about it seems odd that the James gaskets leaked, and as soon as I took them out and put HD gaskets on no leaks so that's why I'm replacing the James seals that are leaking right after I put them in with HD seals.

Who knows maybe I just got a bad set, but the time and money it costs to go back in and do it over I don't think I will be using James again. $30 for the outer primary gasket alone. I spent $65 at HD today for just the 2 seals the outer gasket and 1qt of fluid just to fix a bad seal.

Thanks for the tip on the jack shaft seal the main seal states "oil side " which is opposite of most seals and the new HD jack shaft seal is a double lip so it's a little confusing as to which side faces the primary
