i would think you may be able to get the part number out of the HD Service Manual for your bike. don't really understand why the dealer can't help you with this.

A friend has a service manual I can borrow. I'll have a look at it when I see him next week. The guy at the parts desk didn't seem to know much about the older models. I also needed a speaker grill and had to go to the dealer and show him the other one I had before he could find it on his computer. He thought "it was round like all the other Electra Glides" . :loco .

I will post in the Newby folder. I just joined a week or 2 ago and have been working 12 hr shifts ever since... just got a chance today to log on for a bit. Looks like a great site. It was recommended to me by a member after I bought my Harley a month ago.

Not sure about that model, but the newer ones don't have a nut. The rubber outer cover doubles as the fastener.

Mine definitely has threads for a nut to hold it on. It fell inside the fairing when I tried to reset it.

There's a tripometer on that speedo. Got to reset it somehow.

Here's the reset knob + cable that goes with that speedometer..... Maybe it's the cotter key that join the two that the OP heard drop? :dunno

 

That looks like it right there. The larger knurled piece is a nut that sandwiches the button (knob) to the dash, looks like I need the rubber washer to seal it too.

 

Blackstar, may be one of them or none but try these parts numbers:

Speed nut: 68608-83
Acorn nut: 67106-83
Guide: 4509-66A

Thanks for the possible numbers. Is there an online site where I can check the numbers? I've searched to no avail. I even have a blow up of a parts list for my fairing that the guy at the Dealership gave me but it just shows the hole where the trip meter knob pokes through. The Dealership is an hours ride from me (which is a great excuse for a ride) except for the damn 40 days and nights of rain we've been having.

 

Measure the od and thread pitch. Should be able to find a knurled nut a a good supply house. (maybe)

I couldn't figure out how it could work. My brain was thinking of the old Hondas I had with a can style steedo. Those had the trip dial on the side of the can.

Seeing this pic, it makes sense now.
