Rear saddle bag guards. Thoughts?

I am getting the urge to bolt something new to the Heritage. I have kind of taken a liking to the look of the rear chrome bars in front of the saddle bags.

Anyone running those? I am curious if you have any issues with 2-up comfort or otherwise with them.

If your wife's legs are short, they'll be in the way. They are a treat to bolt on, with the hardware mounting to where the passenger footpeg mounts in place. I removed a set and had to remove the rear tire to get the hardware off. Since the hardware is exposed to water/grit/dirt/snot/phlegm from the rear tire, use antiseize on everything in that location.

Personally, with the older look of the Heritage, they should have some with the bike from the factory. Not only are they just plain cool, they serve a dual purpose, if the bike falls to one side, just like a crash bar does.....

Yo, Chas! I have 'em. I love the way they look. Completes the looks of my Heritage - at least it does in my opinion.

I don't ride two up, but I've actually sat on the rear seat myself just to check and it's no issue whatsoever. I'll post a photo here shortly of it.

Here's a photo I took not too long ago. My bike is a '95 and it took about thirty minutes of tooling to get 'em on. Simple. Fortunately, I had no probs with the hardware.

I think in my case, Mongo, the guy's bike had them on for 11 years, and they were loose and water worked it's way in all the hardware.

Sweet looking bike, too! Love the fishtails and beach bars.

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I could definitely see how a technically simple procedure could turn into a freakin' nightmare because that. Hell, like everything else on my bike, I believe the damn bolts were already loose!! :laugh:laugh It's become somewhat of a slow discovery process in finding all the loctite-less items on the bike. Fortunately, it's usually discovered while sitting still!! As far as rust-tite items, I'm lucky. It's a clean bike.

I meant to comment that I too think those rear bars should be stock. The whole reason I purchased my bike was for that nostalgic/classic look and the bars just seem to make it complete.

The only thing I want to do now is put on a solo seat - you know, like the tractor/police style version. I love what's on there, and I've even grown to like the style of it, but I still want the solo. It will be far more comfortable for long rides and will put me up just a tiny bit. Anyway, I have a guy who will make me a custom one for just shy of three bills, hardware included. I just need to follow through. I've been super indecisive about what color(s) to go with.

Thanks for the compliment, my friend!

As you may have guessed, I don't do me much lane-splittin'! It's wider than a Smart Car...

From mirror to mirror (outside), it's about forty inches. I gotta tell you, it's one comfortable ride for sure. I could ride for a week straight without complaint if my tailbone didn't complain. I get a couple hundred miles out of it before it becomes an issue.

Haha! I actually let my step bro ride it and he didn't have much trouble. He's not a big guy. I was really more worried that he'd dump it as he hadn't ridden in a long time. Yeah, there was a bit of a pucker factor involved...

That's why no one rides my bike!!!
Problem is I really wanna take a spin on a friends friends crotch rocket (never ridden one), so how could I ask that and not let him ride mine....

So basically I'm not riding the rocket Amy time soon!!!!!

Getting back on topic, I think the saddlebag guards look cool too. Obviously, not a good look on ALL bikes but they have their place.

They help keep the front from looking chubby because of the big fairing and engine guards on something like an SG

And on a heritage, well, its just cool period.

I put saddlebag guards on my hetitage, love them but since I got them outta ebay I had no bolts and with the passenger footboards, saddlebag relocation bracket it was quite a operation to mount all together. They thicken up the bike IMO and don't get in the way of the wifs legs, but I can't put a leather cup holder on one of them , they are too bulky and got in the way of her leg.
I don't know what is supplied with the kit when you buy it from harley but I had to use a 3 inch bolt with no shoulder on it or it wouldn't seat the footboard mount properly, so I used grade 8 ready rod cut to fit, put in a spacer in the footboard mounts so I can fit a socket or wrench and used a self locking nut on the back and a chrome acorn on the front. So far its still tight and hopefully stays that way but worked like a hot damn.

Alter, I forgot where I bought the bars, but I don't think they came with anything. It's been awhile since I installed 'em and would go look right now, but the bike is in the shop. I just remember it being really easy on all fronts.

XL, I only let my Step Bro ride it 'cause I know where he lives!! I made sure he knew the repurcussions should he dump it. And that it would be really expensive. He's a successful attorney and a good guy, so I really wasn't concerned. I've let my real brother and one other guy (who rides a Harley) ride it. Otherwise, don't ask... Haha!

I agree. I think they "complete" the classic look for the Heritage.

And apart from smashing the S#^% out of my knee on them the first time I got on it after bolting them on, I really like them.

I love them but they are not available for my Softail Custom.
I had to settle for modifying a set of HD Deluxe guards. Cut and added +/-5" .080 aircraft tubing and reassembled the bends to line up the attaching lower bolts.
Blended the welds and sent them out to be re-chromed.

Softail Custom - Custom Bagger:know

The bags are mid 90's LeatherWorks inc.

Photos after weld and before grinding and polishing. Then sent to chrome shop.
